Apple crisp
The lazy cousin of apple pie that most people secretly prefer: cinnamon apples under a buttery oat crumble, no pastry skills required. Fall's most-searched dessert, good all year.

- 1/4 cup granulated sugar50 g
- juice of 1/2 lemon15 g
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon4 g
Topping
- 1 cup oatmeal90 g
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour60 g
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar100 g
- 1/2 cup butter, cold, cubed115 g
- 1/4 tsp salt2 g
Every ingredient links to its food page — same data, same score, same formula.
Steps
- Toss the apples with the sugar, lemon and cinnamon straight in the baking dish.
- Rub the cold butter into the oats, flour, brown sugar and salt until it clumps like wet sand.
- Scatter the topping over the apples — clumps and all; the clumps become the best bites.
- Bake at 190°C for 40–45 minutes until the juices bubble at the edges and the top is deep golden. Rest 15 minutes; the filling thickens as it cools.
Which apples should I use?
Use apples that fight back — firm and tart. Sweet soft apples collapse into applesauce and take the whole dessert with them.
Alternative
Why this score
engineered against fullnessConcentrated sugar, with little protein or fiber to slow it down; dense calories with little protein, volume or fiber to fill you up.
Three routes to fullness — one is enough
What pulls it down
Computed on the finished dish, not an average of the parts: 2519 kcal goes into the pot, 1336 g of ingredients comes out as ~1150 g of food → 219 kcal per 100 g. Cooking moves water, and energy density is the score's biggest lever — so we show the math. Full formula here.
